You may already know that chocolate is often referred to as the "love food" and the "food of the gods." These labels are frequently displayed in shops, especially around Valentine's Day. But in a world where myths and facts often blur, is there any truth to these claims? Well, it turns out that the ancient belief in chocolate's aphrodisiac properties might actually hold some scientific weight.
The term "aphrodisiac" originates from Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), an aphrodisiac is any substance that is claimed to arouse or increase sexual desire, or libido. Wikipedia, a collaborative online encyclopedia, further defines it as an agent that specifically enhances sexual desire. This suggests that chocolate possesses the ability to stimulate and heighten feelings of attraction and desire.
Chocolate's effect on our mood and libido can be attributed to its chemical composition. It contains phenylethylamine (PEA) and serotonin, two neurochemicals known for their mood-boosting effects. These substances are naturally produced in the brain and are released during experiences of love, passion, and lust. When we consume chocolate, the brain releases PEA and serotonin into the nervous system, potentially leading to an increase in sexual desire.
The use of chocolate as an aphrodisiac dates back centuries. The Maya civilization, known for their advanced understanding of agriculture and astronomy, were among the first to cultivate cocoa beans and recognize their potential as an aphrodisiac. Mayan literature even refers to cocoa as the "food of the gods," highlighting its cultural and spiritual significance. Later, the Aztecs, who conquered the Maya, adopted and expanded upon the use of chocolate. They believed that chocolate made women more receptive to advances and increased men's vigor. Montezuma II, the famed Aztec emperor, reportedly consumed at least 50 cups of a chocolate drink daily to enhance his sexual prowess, a practice that likely contributed to his reputation for maintaining a large harem.
Cocoa beans held immense value in Aztec society, serving as a form of currency. They were considered a valuable asset, and conquered tribes were often required to pay tributes in cocoa beans. The Maya, after their subjugation by the Aztecs, also paid tributes in this valuable commodity.
So, if you're looking to add a spark to your romantic life, consider indulging in some chocolate. It's a relatively inexpensive and readily available way to potentially enhance intimacy and pleasure for both partners, unlike some aphrodisiacs that are believed to primarily benefit men.
However, if chocolate isn't an option or if you have dietary restrictions, or are seeking a more targeted approach to addressing erectile dysfunction, there are pharmaceutical alternatives available.
